What Are Social Websites?

Receive your money by check or paypal anywhere in the world at no extra charge. This was a question that perplexed me for quite a while, as I was somewhat slow on the uptake with these sites. And the answer is not, as you might expect, as simple as you would expect. Generally, social websites are sites that are not static in nature - i.e. the website owner publishes content and that's it. Instead, they are sites where the visitors (or users, if you prefer), can interact with the site in various ways. At its simplest level, this might include weblogs (now better known as just blogs), where readers are encouraged to leave comments on the various posts, which in turn can stimulate a form of digital conversation. But they have, in recent years, become far more sophisticated than that. And there are, to make matters more complicated, several different types of social websites now as well. Perhaps one of the most well-known, partly because it was one of the first really big ones, is MySpace. This, and some of the others in this category such as Facebook and Squidoo, provide people with the means to create their own networks of friends; you can create a very personalized profile page, blogs, join or form groups, and much more. Similar to these two, but much more business-oriented, is LinkedIn, which is very much a networking site where you can look for job opportunities, find people with skills you need, connect with current or previous work colleagues and, once again, form and join groups of people who share similar experience, skills and interests. Other popular sites in this category would include FriendsReunited, where you are able to link up with people you've known from school, college, and companies you've worked for, and GenesReunited, where the aim is to help track down family members. Next on the list would be social bookmarking sites, with perhaps the most famous being Digg and Delicious. These sites allow users to bookmark sites and/or news stories they find useful or interesting, so that others can then visit them too. The more people that bookmark a particular web page, the more popular it is deemed to be, and the more prominently it appears on the social bookmarking site. There are, these days, a plethora of such sites, with more sprouting up all of the time. Next, there are the sites that are generally referred to as micro-blogging sites, and the most famous of these is undoubtedly Twitter, where you can post what they call "tweets", each of which is restricted to just 140 characters. The one thing all of these different types of social website have in common is the ability to seek out people with the same interests, skills, occupations, backgrounds as you and to interact with them on an almost real-time basis. For those who have not yet dipped their toes in the social website waters, it's maybe time to get wet - they are not, as I first thought, as daunting as I imagined, although I have to confess that the addiction some people seem to suffer from when it comes to "tweeting", for example, escapes me completely.
