Getting Backlinks

Ever since Google came along with its concept of Page Rank, the entire Internet marketing industry has changed.

There was a time when all you needed to do to get listed on the search engines was to throw up a site and wait a few days - after all, there were far fewer sites in those days (my first site was launched in 1997 and it ranked for a large number of terms very easily).

As more sites were published, and people got a bit savvier, the game changed and it was all about keyword stuffing - putting the keywords you wanted to rank for all over the place (e.g. the Title tag, the meta keyword tags, the meta description, the heading tag, throughout the body copy, and even listing yet more in the footer).

It was so easy to game the search engines that Google took a completely different tack - Page Rank.

It realised that the best measure of how good a site (or page, actually) really is is to look at how many people link to it.

In the good old days, webmasters would link to other sites freely if they thought the content was useful, informative, interesting, or as often as not, funny.

But once more and more people starting building sites to make money, these links were harder to get.

And Page Rank added to that problem - having accumulated some PR of your own, the last thing you wanted to do was bleed some of it off to another site.

Reciprocal linking programs then became popular, and they too were successful for a while.

However, as is often the case, it became abused, and Google reduced the value of such links.

So, the issue remains - how do you get quality backlinks when everybody is doing all they can to rank highly in the search engines?

Paid links were an option for a while, but Google has a downer on those too now.

Well, the good news is that, for the time being, there are still ways to get good links back to your site (e.g. 3-way linking schemes, although there are many who claim that Google can detect these now as well).

Other service exist too, and one that is getting extremely good reviews is LinxBoss - because it is a set-and-forget system. After all, one of the keys to getting backlinks is that you don't want to have to spend all day on this mind-numbingly boring activity, so why not get somebody to do it for you?
