Welcome to Part 1 of this Banner Tutorial, which is all about creating digital banners for your websites!

Advertising banners were probably the first "big thing" on the Internet, and they're still around for a good reason - they work!

If you sign up for other people's programs, or are an affiliate for other companies, most of them will offer a range of banners, of all shapes and sizes, and there are plenty of banner exchanges available to make sure that these banners are seen by as many people as possible.

But, supposing you have your own website and need a banner? How do you go about finding one?

Well, you have a few options:

  1. Find some "generic" banner that you can customise. If you do a search on the Internet for "free online banner creation" (without the quotation marks), you'll find many websites offering a free banner creation service. Typically, you can choose one of many different styles of banner, and then add your own text so that they are personalised. These are fine, to a degree, but you end up with something that is not unique. And what is the point in creating your own unique website and then using a banner that everybody else is using?
  2. You can use a sort of text banner. These consist of no graphics, but are simply a heading created using standard HTML or CSS. The advantages are that they load quickly (i.e. no large graphics files to be downloaded), but they do look sort of "plain wrap". And doesn't your website deserve something a bit more special?
  3. Pay somebody to create your banner for you. The advantage here is that you should end up with a professional-looking banner that is unique, but the disadvantage is that this can cost you a fair amount of money. (You can always put your work out to tender, at sites such as Elance, as this is one way of getting a good deal, but watch out for minimum budgets of about $50, and be careful too about requesting too many changes to the draft, as these may fall outside of the scope of the original project and therefore cost you additional money.)
  4. You can create your own banner, from scratch. This may be daunting if you've never dipped your toe in these particular waters, but the biggest advantage is that you will end up with a banner that nobody else has that will look exactly the way you want it to. And it's not actually that difficult, and that's what these Banner Tutorials are all about!

So, where do you start?

This is covered in Banners For Beginners (Part 2) - Choosing Banner Making Software.
